How To Estimate The Number of
Gallons of Water Your
Pool Holds
Every pool owner should have some idea of the
number of gallons of water his or her pool holds for numerous reasons including
adding chemicals, calculating cost savings by using one product over another,
and deciding which automatic pool cleaner to purchase. Often the contractor who constructed the pool, or the manufacturer who built it can
provide you with the gallonage. If this information is not available, use
one or more of the following methods to estimate the approximate gallonage of
your pool:
Rectangular or Square Pools:
1. Measure the length (L) and the width (W) of the pool;
2. Assuming your pool has an average depth (D) of 5':
A.) Multiply the length times the width (L X W) to determine square
footage (SF);
B.) Multiply the square footage times the average depth (5')
(SF X D) to determine the
cubic footage (CF) ;
B.) Multiply the cubic footage times 7.5 (CF X 7.5) to determine total gallons.
Example: A 20' X 40' pool would have 800
square feet, multiplied by 5 = 40,000 feet X 7.5 = 30,000 gallons Round
or Oval Pools:
1. Measure the diameter of the pool (if the pool is Oval, measure the
diameter from top
to bottom and the diameter from side to side add them together
and divide by 2 to
obtain the "average diameter"), ;
2. Assuming your pool has an average depth of 4':
A.) Multiply the diameter by itself (D X D) to
determine footage (F);
B.) Multiply the footage times the depth times 5.0 to
determine total gallons.
